2026 Event Recap

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2026 Utah Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration. From the Community Gathering and Celebration Program at the Utah State Capitol to the Celebration Walk, Community Service Project, and Choir Concert, this year’s celebration was a powerful reminder of what is possible when our community comes together with purpose.

We are deeply grateful to the community members, leaders, artists, performers, volunteers, and partners who helped make this day meaningful and impactful.

Community Gathering & Celebration Program at the Utah State Capitol

The day began at the Utah State Capitol with a Community Gathering and Celebration Program that brought together residents, community leaders, elected officials, artists, and youth. Through music, spoken word, reflection, and shared dialogue, we honored Dr. King’s legacy and recommitted ourselves to the ongoing work of justice, equity, and unity.

Presenters and Performers

Honoring Representative Sandra Hollins

A special moment of this year’s Celebration Program was the recognition and honoring of Sandra Hollins, whose current legislative term marks her final term in office. Representative Hollins has been a tireless advocate for equity, community, and justice, and her leadership has left a lasting impact on Utah.

We were honored to celebrate her service with a tribute video and expressions of gratitude from the community she has long served.

Celebration Walk

Following the program, community members came together for the Celebration Walk, moving from the Capitol South Steps to the Regent Street Black Box Theater in downtown Salt Lake City as a visible expression of unity and collective commitment to positive change.

As participants moved through the city, the walk served as both a reflection on Dr. King’s legacy and a public reminder that the work of justice, compassion, and community continues beyond a single gathering.

Thank you to everyone who walked with us — individuals, families, organizations, and community groups — and helped carry the spirit of the day forward.

Community Choir Concert & Performances

The celebration continued with powerful musical performances that honored the role of music in the Civil Rights Movement and its continued ability to inspire, uplift, and unite.

Your voices brought joy, reflection, and energy to the day and helped close the celebration on a powerful note.

Community Service Impact

Service remains at the heart of the Utah MLK Day Celebration. This year, through the generosity and hard work of volunteers and donors, we assembled 250 Winter Care Kits to support members of our unhoused community.

In addition to essential supplies, community members included handwritten care notes in each package — small but meaningful messages of encouragement, dignity, and compassion.

These care kits were distributed to:

Murray Children’s Pantry
Fill the Pot Ministries
Additional community partners serving those in need

We are especially grateful to the Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi at the University of Utah, whose members volunteered their time throughout the day and supported the event in multiple ways, including helping assemble care packages.

Thank you to everyone who donated items, gave financially, volunteered their time, or helped coordinate service efforts. Your compassion and action made a real difference.
